MUSKEGON, Mich. (WZZM) - A U.S. Census Bureau report released Tuesday finds Muskegon has the highest unemployment rating for a community its size.

The report compares the jobless rate in 2000 with the average for 2005 through 2007 in every community with at least 20,000 residents.

Muskegon’s jobless rate averaged 22.1 percent in the latest period. That’s more than twice its rate in 2000.

Detroit ranked second with a 21.6 percent jobless rate. Pontiac was ninth at 19 percent.

Unemployment increased in 71 percent of the communities surveyed.
